“ | I didn't create a weapon, all of you did! I created the ultimate device for understanding all the beings of the universe. | ” |
The Omnimatrix,[2][3] better known as the Omnitrix, was a watch-like device that attached to Ben Tennyson's wrist at the beginning of the series and is the device that the franchise revolves around. The device is a portable library of intergalactic genetic data that allowed the wielder to alter their DNA at will and transform into a variety of different alien species, each with their own unique abilities.
The Omnitrix was destroyed in The Final Battle: Part 2 by Ben and replaced with the Ultimatrix.
Appearance[]
Pre-Recalibration[]
In its first form that Ben encountered, the Omnitrix looked like a large wristwatch with a wide band, primarily black and grey in color. It had a dark grey faceplate in the middle (like a watch dial) that had a green hourglass shape (the symbol of universal peace/Galvan Tech) on it.[DM 1] The faceplate was part of a cylindrical tower; when Ben selected his aliens, the tower would pop up from the base of the Omnitrix, and the hourglass would invert into a diamond and show the aliens' silhouettes. The band had an activation button on the side facing the user if on their left hand. The ring of the faceplate had four symmetrical lights that would glow with the hourglass symbol. Finally, the band had two rings of white tubing, that would glow green under special circumstances.
In Destroy All Aliens and Omniverse flashbacks, the Omnitrix looks the same as in the Original Series, but with two buttons instead of one.
In Race Against Time Timeline the Omnitrix looks exactly same as in the Original Series, but the tubes are grey. When the core pops up, it glows green.
Post-Recalibration[]
After recalibrating, the Omnitrix resembled a slimmer and sleeker watch-like shape, now with a green wristband, and the face of the dial becoming black and green. The inside of the hourglass symbol glowed in different colors during certain moments; these colors signify the mode that the Omnitrix was presently in. When Ben is selecting his aliens it shows the alien's hologram standing on the core rather than the alien's silhouette.
In Alien Swarm, the Omnitrix looks mostly the same as in Alien Force except it is a darker shade of green.
In Time Heals Timeline, The Omnitrix looks exactly same.
Purpose[]
The Omnitrix was created by Azmuth as a tool of peace in an act of repentance following the destruction caused by his previous creation, Ascalon, a weapon of terrible power.[4]
To the rest of the universe, the Omnitrix had a two-fold purpose. One was to promote inter-species understanding by allowing other beings to experience different ways of life.[1] The other was to function as a repository for the DNA of over a million different species that Azmuth thought were intelligent.[DM 2] The samples were scanned, and when necessary, repaired.[DM 3] This collection of DNA was then preserved in the event that any of species catalogued should ever be rendered extinct, allowing the Omnitrix to restore them to life.[5]
Unbeknownst to everyone else, Azmuth had a third reason for creating the Omnitrix. He hoped that his estranged lover Zennith, who had left him as he created Ascalon, would learn of his change and come back to him.[4]

Modes[]
“ | Sorry, Grandpa... But at least I figured out how to make it work. All you do is press this button. Then, when the ring pops up, just twist it until you see the guy you wanna be. Slam it down, and bammo! You're one of ten super-cool alien dudes! | ” |
Active Mode is the Omnitrix's default mode when idle. It is where the user can select the transformation they want to become; initiate the process of transforming; and stay in said transformation. The actual usage time is 10 minutes at a time.[pop-up 1][7] However, different factors and actions performed by the user can severely diminish the available usage time: most commonly if the user, while transformed, changes to another form. A single chain of 2 transformations limits the combined usage time to no more than 10 minutes, and more often less due to power leakage;[DM 4][DM 5] whereas chaining 3 or 4 transformations would leave the user with substantially less combined time than 10 minutes. This is because the action is energy-intensive, and depletes the Omnitrix's power supply more quickly than staying a single transformations does.[DM 6] Additionally, activities with a lot of moving, like fighting, seem to tax and deplete the Omnitrix. However, if regular transformations are tampered with, the user can't always turn back.[citation needed]
After the Omnitrix recalibrated, the symbols on the aliens were also of the green color, and located on their chests as a result of the glitch correction that was in the pre-calibrated Omnitrix. When the Omnitrix's usage time is fully depleted (i.e. "times out"), it goes into Recharge Mode: firstly warning of the timing out; then detransforming the user and locking all functions of Active Mode while the Omnitrix recharges. It takes around 5 minutes to recharge, though it may take more time if tampered with. Recharge Mode's main purpose is to prevent the alien DNA from attaching permanently to its host.[pop-up 2][8][pop-up 3]
The Omnitrix is powered by a special self-renewable power supply that will long outlive Ben.
The Omnitrix is capable of detecting when it's host is in any sort of life-threatening distress. Specifically, it can instantly recharge to protect the user from a direct physical threat. This was shown when Ben was stuck to a wall about to be killed by Kevin 11[9] and when Zs'Skayr tried to possess Ben.[10] Both times, despite just timing out within a minute earlier, the Omnitrix recharges instantly when the user's life is put in direct threat. This feature was switched off after the recalibration.
If the user is knocked out or hurt enough, the Omnitrix will revert them to their normal form.
The recalibrated Omnitrix times out with no warning due to the warning being switched off when the Omnitrix recalibrated. When the Omnitrix was repairing the DNAliens' to make them human again, the Omnitrix went into Recharge Mode after a while.[5]
After the Omnitrix had reset,[11] the time out warning feature was turned back on. When recharging the hourglass flashes either red instead of remaining a solid red, as it had when the Omnitrix was in its original form. The Omnitrix can alternatively flash green, rather than red, when signalling a time out.[12]“ | When you're close, set the Omnitrix to Capture Mode, and then it'll do the rest. | ” |
When a new DNA sample has been unlocked from the Codon Stream, or when the Omnitrix captures new DNA not present in the Codon Stream, Collect Mode is activated. It can also reclaim lost or removed alien DNA that was in the Codon Stream.
It scans to match the species, then moves the identified species to the active playlist. If it's seen the species before, it does it passively, without Ben actively scanning.[DM 7]
Unlike in the Original Series, the Omnitrix in Alien Force would not scan by touch (due to its recalibration).
The Omnitrix could scan Kevin's mutations, but it was programmed not to.[DM 8]“ | Azmuth is a hopeless paranoid. He built in the self-destruct as a last resort to keep his most prized creation out of the wrong hands, but he never thought anyone would be foolish enough to set it off. | ” |
In Self-Destruct Mode, the Omnitrix charges energy while counting down until it explodes. S.D.M. functions as a last resort should the Omnitrix fall into the wrong hands. It can be activated by Voice Command.
When in S.D.M. for a few days, the Omnitrix can charge enough energy to cause an energy ripple that will destroy the entire universe. While in S.D.M., the Omnitrix can send out energy bursts capable of throwing the user through the air.
When the S.D.M. is activated, the Omnitrix sends out a signal that any ship can pick up (unless it was activated by Voice Command), such as when Vilgax picked it up with a stolen ship and Tetrax picked up the signal, likely as a distress signal.
The S.D.M was used and successfully triggered in an attempt to force Vilgax to give it to Ben, although he refused. It only destroyed itself, and not the universe, because it was charged for only 30 seconds (as opposed to a few days).[14]The Omnitrix begins to recalibrate while selecting a set of new aliens.
The Omnitrix makes a beep-like noise, the hourglass turns blue, then it changes to a glowing black and green and morphs into its new shape.
The Omnitrix has hundreds of different forms (this is to fit different users).[DM 9]
The Omnitrix gives its wielder a new set of aliens depending on whether it is a hard or soft reset.[DM 10]
When hacking the Omnitrix, Kevin accidentally and briefly reverted the Omnitrix to its original appearance before changing it back.[15] Azmuth could also program it to recalibrate remotely.[DM 11]Features[]
General[]
- The Omnitrix mainly allowed for the user to transform into a numerous variety of alien life-forms, each with their own unique powers and abilities (along with their weaknesses) and in a selection of alien DNA that is in groups of 10.[5]
- The Omnitrix acted as a wireless receiver for the Codon Stream.[16]
- By accessing the Codon Stream in a faster-than-light manner,[DM 12] the Omnitrix used special Omni-Energy to merge its wearer's DNA with the DNA samples it held to create transformations.[17][18][pop-up 4][6][pop-up 5]
- Alien DNA is "injected" into the user, meaning they retain the wielder's personality, memories, and consciousness.[DR 1] Because of this, most of the aliens are not full-blown aliens, with the exceptions of Ectonurite and Conductoid DNA.[DR 2] The Omnitrix could not transform the user into another of its own species.
- Ben's DNA was stored in the Omnitrix itself instead of the Codon Stream.[DM 12]
- In order for the user to change the size, the matter was created from energy or reconstituted to energy as needed.[citation needed]
- The Omnitrix had a quick change feature.
- The user could change back by turning the second ring on the dial to the 3 o'clock position. When Ben appeared to be changing mentally, it was just a coincidence. He was out of time and changing anyway.[DM 13]
- Manually touching the Omnitrix symbol not only allows the user to immediately transform back to normal[19] but can also be used to change forms while already transformed.[20]
- The Omnitrix could alter its size to fit the user's wrist.[14]
- When transformed, the Omnitrix protected the user from negative effects, including:
- The Omnitrix had a built-in energy feedback blast to defend against anyone trying to force it off of its owner.[pop-up 6][7][pop-up 7]
- Once placed on the wearer, the Omnitrix could not be removed by normal physical means.
- The Omnitrix could show a database image of all aliens unlocked.[13]
- The Omnitrix was able to repair genetic damage, such as turn DNAliens back to normal and remove Xenocites.[23]
- The Omnitrix could genetically manipulate DNA or reprogram a species' DNA (like fuse DNA from different species of aliens).[11]
- The Omnitrix had a scratch guard that Ben didn't know how to remove. It fell off after Ben 10: Destroy All Aliens.[DJW 1]
- The Omnitrix changed the aliens' eye color to match the user's eye color.
- The Omnitrix could be synchronized with another Omnitrix, even without the user's intent.[24][25]
- The Omnitrix was waterproof.[DM 14]
- The Omnitrix could replace one of its DNA samples with someone else from the same species.[DM 15]
- In its recalibrated state, the Omnitrix granted the user full understanding of the aliens' powers upon transforming into them.[DM 16] However, this is inconsistent, as Ben had to be educated on the rules of Alien X's powers[26] and was unaware that Chromastone could fly.[27]
- The Omnitrix had the ability to redirect scans from inorganic aliens if the power was boosted.[28]
- The Omnitrix could create an alien species, as with the case of Nanomech.[28]
Extensions[]
- The Omnitrix had AI (Artificial Intelligence).
- The Omnitrix functioned as a GPS.[29]
- The Omnitrix could create a hologram map, which is similar to the one in Plumber Badges.[29]
- The Omnitrix had a 2-way communication system with Plumber Badges.
- The Omnitrix had a built-in Universal Translator and could also translate other Earth languages,[DM 17] but not animal languages.[DM 18]
- The Omnitrix could teleport the user through Azmuth's teleportation channel.[16]
- The Omnitrix had a homing beacon that could guide the user to Xenon if it was ever in the planet's quadrant.[1]
- Once within a close enough range of Xenon, the Omnitrix could fire a beam of green energy that negates the effects of the planet's light-absorbing device.[1]
Color Coding[]
- The Omnitrix could display ten colors, each meaning something different:
- Green: Active Mode
- Red: Recharge Mode
- Yellow: Collect/Capture Mode
- Blue: Recalibration Mode
- Purple: Controlled or risk of temporal threat
- Orange: Self Destruct Mode (original Omnitrix form)
- Grey: Inactive Mode
- Black: Stop Mode
- Pink: Under spell effect
Display Modes[]
- The Omnitrix had two known display modes.
- During the Original Series, it was black silhouettes of the aliens.
- After recalibrated, it was changed to dark green holograms of the aliens.
- By changing the settings on the Omnitrix, either of the above display modes could have been used with the Omnitrix in either of its forms.
Clothing[]
- Prior to its recalibration, the Omnitrix automatically used the molecules of its wearer's clothes to create coverings for the aliens.[pop-up 8][6] This function was lost when the Omnitrix recalibrated; instead, nanomachines broke its wearer's clothes down and stored them until the transformation ended.[DM 19]
Allocation[]
- When the user was transformed, an Omnitrix symbol appeared on the chest. The symbol was actually the Omnitrix itself, appearing in this form because many species don't have wrists.[citation needed]
- Although the Omnitrix was in the center of the chest area on every alien in Alien Force is for easy access, it was put in different places on some aliens in the Original Series and Omniverse flashbacks.
- The limited positioning of the symbols was the result of a glitch of the Omnitrix.[DJW 2]
Voice Command[]
- The Omnitrix could be controlled by voice, called Voice Command.
- Access Master Control
- Unlocks the Master Control but only works to Azmuth's voice.
- Decouple Omnitrix Command Code: 000 - Release Coupling - 0
- Removes the Omnitrix.
- Omnitrix Self Destruct in (time): Command code: 000 - Destruct - 0
- Activates Self-Destruct Mode.
- Abort Self Destruct Code 10
- Deactivates Self-Destruct Mode.
- Omnitrix Reset Code 10
- Activates Reset Mode.

Malfunctions[]
“ | You've overloaded the thing so badly, it could've sent half of the galaxy away. Those non-stop transformations are gonna break it. | ” |
– Azmuth, explaining the dangers of overusing the quick-change feature.[20] |
- If the Omnitrix's faceplate cover is broken off, the result was DNA hybrids.[22]
- During the Original Series and the Omniverse flashbacks, the Omnitrix would sometimes transform its user into a random alien that they did not select.
- This malfunction came back after it was hacked.[30]
- The Omnitrix can be affected by electromagnetic waves, which ultimately activated the self-destruct mode.[31]
- When exposed to electromagnetic interference, the Omnitrix could cause unintentional transformations and will be unable to deactivate until the source of the interference is gone.
- This could work in reverse, rapidly changing the user from one form to another until someone/something stops it.
- If the user gets sick, the Omnitrix will make the aliens sick too.[32][27]
- However, after the Omnitrix recalibration, the aliens wouldn't get badly affected, just weaker than normal.
- Until its destruction in The Final Battle: Part 2, the Omnitrix would keep Kevin in his third mutation form after it was hacked.
- Technical glitches that would leave all the aliens naked and cold.[DJW 2]
- Sometimes the Omnitrix would randomly leave the user stuck as an alien for an indefinite amount of time[33] that could only be deactivated by Azmuth hitting the Omnitrix symbol.[34]
- The Omnitrix has no mind control protection.[35]
- After the Omnitrix recalibrated, any damage the user sustains was retained when said user times out.
- Non-stop transformations could overload the Omnitrix and cause it to break.[36][20]
- If the user activates a beam to repair genetic damages of certain beings such as DNAliens at once, the Omnitrix's energy will deplete and the user will get exhausted, turning the device into the recharge mode.[37]
- An overload of Mana, or magic in general, could cause the Omnitrix to heavily malfunction.[38]
- If the Omnitrix is scratched, it will slowly transform the user.[39]
- If the Omnitrix is creating an alien species, it will not allow the user to transform.[28]

Trivia[]
- The Omnitrix was originally called the Megawatt (alternatively spelled "Megawhat"), short for Megadeoxyribonucleictransdimensionaltransforminalnumerator.[DR 5][JK 1][pop-up 11]
- Originally, the Omnitrix only held thousands of DNA samples.[pop-up 4][6] This was retconned in Alien Force, as it was revealed that there were over a million DNA samples in the Omnitrix.[5]
- The Omnitrix's pre-calibration design was made by Dave Johnson.[DJ 1]
- According to Derrick J. Wyatt, Spitter was unlocked off-screen after Ben 10: Destroy All Aliens and is available to Ben in present day.[DJW 3]
- However, according to Matt Wayne, Ben had not unlocked Spitter as of The Frogs of War: Part 2,[MW 2] which means he was not unlocked in the original Omnitrix either.
- The Omnitrix is loaded with underpowered and powerless aliens that have not been seen on-screen, many of which had been unlocked when Ben was 11.[MW 3]
- Some joke aliens that Matt Wayne come up with that would fall under this category include Somnambulizard, Bungee Sponge, Skidmarx, Mealymouth, Hippopotamass, and Crabtastic.[MW 4]
- The Galvans were the first species added to the Omnitrix.[DJW 6] However, Grey Matter's DNA sample came from neither Azmuth nor Albedo.[DJW 7]
- The Omnitrix contained Vilgax's DNA until the power surge on the Chimeran Hammer caused it to malfunction and deleted the DNA.[43][DR 4]
- The Omnitrix's green glow is its unique DNA energy signal.[pop-up 12][44][pop-up 13]
- Ben's transformations happen in an instant.[pop-up 14] Transformation sequences show it in slow motion.[pop-up 15][44]
- Many of the problems Ben had with getting the Omnitrix to work were also safeguards put there by Azmuth.[pop-up 16][1]
- Azmuth compared the Omnitrix to Noah's Ark and Ben to Noah.[5]
- The Omnitrix was originally intended for Max and was programmed to work for his DNA because Ben is Max's grandson, the close genetic match is what allowed him to use it.[36][14][pop-up 17]
- The Omnitrix's power source was smaller and more powerful than the Sub-Energy.[pop-up 18]
- Ben found a couple unknown aliens while playing with the Omnitrix off-screen between War of the Worlds: Part 2 and Vengeance of Vilgax: Part 1.[DM 10]
- Originally, the aliens' Omnitrix symbols' grey and white coloration in the Original Series was caused by a malfunction.[DM 22] In Omniverse, the cause of the coloration was changed to a scratch guard that Ben didn't know how to remove. It fell off after Ben 10: Destroy All Aliens.[DJW 1]
- From a design standpoint, the Omnitrix symbols were mostly changed because that's how the crew decided to color it for 10-year-old Ben's appearance in Ultimate Alien.[DM 23]
- During the early development of Omniverse, it was decided from the get-go that 11-year-old Ben's aliens would all have green Omnitrix symbols.[DJW 8]
- However, it is open to interpretation whether the Omnitrix's grey and white symbol no longer exists or is just another shade of green and black due to a change in art style, as in And Then There Was Ben, as soon as Ben Prime receives the Omnitrix for the first time and turns into Heatblast, his Omnitrix symbol is black and green instead of grey and white.
- Most of the Omnitrix aliens wore outfits similar to 10/11-year-old Ben's black and white T-shirt in the Original Series and Omniverse flashbacks was because they looked cool and helped make all the aliens appear with a common thread.[DJ 2] These clothes also helped tie the aliens to Ben, even if they were unable to work with certain aliens.[DJ 3]
- This feature was removed when the Omnitrix recalibrated. When asked if he would give Ben's aliens Ben's clothing, Dwayne McDuffie replied "Likely never".[DM 23]
- According to Derrick, the Omnitrix had technical glitches that would cause random flight and abilities not native to the alien species.[DJW 2]
- However, it is unknown if this is canon as Matt seemed to be unaware of the existence of glitch powers.[MW 5]
- Besides being the intergalactic peace symbol,[DM 1] the Omnitrix's hourglass symbol serves as the insignia for the Galvan's society.[DJW 9]
- In Max Out, the recalibrated Omnitrix spoke in a voice similar to Ben's, but deeper. In all following episodes, it spoke in Ben's normal voice.
- The Omnitrix's voice-activated self-destruct sequence is the same code from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock that James T. Kirk used to activate the Enterprise's one minute self-destruct sequence (000 destruct-0).
- The recalibrated Omnitrix aliens yelled their names after Ben transformed into them because "they were asserting their identity as they gained consciousness".[DM 16]
- According to Ben, he shouted the aliens' names to insert fear into his enemies.[45]
- It was Dwayne McDuffie's idea to have Ben shout the names of his aliens, as he thought it would help younger fans know the aliens' names.[DM 24]
- Ben would later stop doing this prior to Omniverse because "he got tired of it."[MW 6]
- Ben set several layers of security to the recalibrated Omnitrix, coded to his DNA and voice, to make tampering more difficult. This is one of the reasons Vilgax was unable to manipulate the Omnitrix like he did in the Original Series.[DM 12]
- All Omnitrix aliens made exclusively for the Reboot are in this Omnitrix as well.[DR 3]
- One of the sounds used for the recalibrated Omnitrix is called "Computer, beeps 11".[46]
Notes[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 Originally, the Werewolf, the Mummy and Dr. Viktor were the DNA sources for Blitzwolfer, Snare-Oh and Frankenstrike respectively.[pop-up 9][pop-up 10][40] This was later changed, as the DNA samples of their respective species were said to have already been present in the Omnitrix. Ben just misunderstood what the device was doing when it "sampled" their DNA.[DM 20][DM 21]
- ↑ The Chronian transformation is non-canon as of Ben 10,000 Returns due to Race Against Time being retconned as an alternate timeline and Eon's backstory being revised into an alternate version of Ben.
- ↑ Different crew members have had different interpretations of what happened to Feedback:
- Matt Wayne believes that Feedback was locked from the Omnitrix.[MW 1]
- Derrick J. Wyatt believes that Feedback was removed, with his DNA no longer being present in the Codon Stream altogether. This is evidenced by Albedo not gaining access to Feedback's DNA when he received the ability to transform into any species.[41][DJW 4][DJW 5]
- Kevin Rubio believes that Malware absorbed Feedback and a little bit of Ben's genetic code.[KR 1]
- Matt Youngberg believes that Malware absorbed Feedback's genetic code, and that Azmuth removed Conductoid DNA from all subsequent Omnitrixes.[MY 1][MY 2]
